Poetry and Science

Fuko Katsuda

The works of this exhibition were inspired by Hideki Yukawa Japan’s very first Nobel Prize winner. And the headline of the exhibition is stake from his book with the same title. Yukawa wrote: Poetry and science seem far away, yet close; very close, yet far away. Well, they are actually very close.’ Why? Because they both start from observing and listening to nature. There is no great difference between smelling the fragrance of a rose and admiring its beauty and examining the shape of the flower.”

This short paragraph, say Fuko Katsuda, „opened my mind to the idea that there is no point in drawing a line between things that seem not to be meant to meet, and I also thought that perhaps magic only happens when they meet: Human and nature, men and women, children and adults, subculture and academia. The aim of this exhibition is to build a world where all boundaries are blurred and let visitors witness what is there“.

Katsuda’s “Poetry and Science” consists of four paintings on canvas, one drawing on paper and one sculptural piece. Although the exhibition is made up of a mixture of different media, all the works follow the same themes, such as science fiction, post-humanism, speculating about the future and alternative corporeality. These themes act as a line connecting the dots, much like constellations.
