Isabella Andrea Pacher

Curated by Julia Harrauer and Marlene Stahl

What happens when technology dies? When a corpus is no longer used – where does it disappear to? Isabella Andrea Pacher works as her archive and captures her ghosts. She does not revive them, she captures them. She becomes an archive herself, giving a new form to what has faded. Her sculptures are not haunted; they are part of an ongoing conversation, preserved in time. They open a rift in time – a space in which the moment expands into the timeless.

Where do the spirits of things go? What happens when you capture them? The material traces the object, just as the eye follows the material. Things often unconsciously act as archives that carry on the past. As witnesses, we always come to history a little too late – and yet we make it present through the shared experience of its traces. Found objects, embedded in new narratives, allow the past to happen again – but differently. In new bodies, in new places. When the spirit no longer has a body of its own, it finds other ways to manifest itself.
