AG18 Spotlight: Marilia Kolibiri

THE COIL PATH

The artist explores the complex layers of contemporary culture and its impact on identity and societal norms. She uses symbols which form our everyday lives, engrained in modern life yet often overlooked. These elements serve as a lens through which the artist investigates the social and psychological layers that define human experience.

Overall her work aims to unravel the complicated relationships between gender, social violence and memory. Therefore encouraging the viewer in a reflection on how these forces shape his perceptions and the world.

In her recent works, the snake emerges as a central motif. Through this symbol, she explores feminine identity, social trauma, and the personal wounds that often constitute our deepest shadows.

The snake acts as an active subject : coiling, protecting, or attacking. It frequently pierces or envelops human figures, embodying internal conflicts, hidden desires and visible fears. The snake becomes a vessel for trauma : both personal and collective — but also a force of purification and transformation.

It allows the recognition and rewriting of past experiences — a process of social and emotional self-healing. Through the re-interpretation of this symbol, she seeks to challenge and subvert dominant patriarchal narratives, turning the snake into a tool of empowerment.
